The International Energy Agency warned Thursday that a seasonal upswing in demand could put upwards pressure on oil prices in the near-term.
"If seasonal cycles in crude and product demand are any guide, the recent easing of prices may be relatively shortlived," the agency said in its monthly report on the oil market.
Since the beginning of the month, the price of December Brent crude futures on London's ICE Futures exchange has fallen just over 1%. On the New York Mercantile Exchange, light, sweet crude futures for December delivery has fallen nearly 3%.
Although the Paris-based organization, which advises developed countries on energy policy, said that the oil market is currently well supplied due to surging production in North America, it added that "given proverbial uncertainties about the weather and geopolitics, the market might not be at the end of its rollercoaster ride."
The IEA said that demand for oil products is on the verge of a seasonal increase and refineries should steeply raise the amount of oil they process in November and December. On top of that, many of the world's biggest oil producers face production problems that "continue to relentlessly fester."
